This is specialized clerical work of more than average difficulty that may involve extensive personal and telephone contacts with customers.

Employees in this class perform duties requiring detailed, technical knowledge of a specific work area. Work may require the operation of a computer and other standard office equipment. Most positions in this class require extensive public contact, explaining policies and procedures involved in the work area, assisting and directing employees and the public, and responding to unusual situations requiring the exercise of considerable initiative and independent judgment. Employees in this class may supervise others and may be required to act independently in making decisions and taking action without immediate supervision. Work is reviewed by an assigned supervisor through observation of work while in progress, in conferences with the employee, examination of work products, and reports from citizens and other employees.

This job classification is included within the bargaining unit represented by Teamsters Local Union 769 and therefore is subject to the terms and conditions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City of Fort Lauderdale and Teamsters Local Union 769.

Beginning January 1st 2021, the City will participate in the Florida Retirement System (FRS) which will require a 3% contribution from employees. Anyone hired after Jan 1, 2021 will be automatically enrolled in FRS.

An employee in this class is responsible for performing one or more clerical assignments of average difficulty, which may include receptionist, customer service, cashiering, personnel records keeping, financial records keeping, purchasing records keeping, confidential records keeping, and other activities. Some positions may require the operation of typewriters, photocopy machines, terminals, and other standard office equipment for which no previous training is needed. Under general supervision, employee receives instructions orally or in writing and performs tasks in accordance with established procedures. The employee is expected to exercise some initiative and independent judgment in addition to reasonable initiative, tact and courtesy when contact with the public and other employees is involved. Supervision may be exercised on an assigned or temporary basis over subordinate personnel. . Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion for completeness, accuracy and conformance with established procedures.

  • Performs clerical duties in support of an assigned area of responsibility
  • Produces a wide variety of reports, letters, spreadsheets, data entries, memoranda and statistical charts

  • Reconciles P-Cards/Depart Purchasing Card statements
  • Receives and processes incoming invoices
  • Prepares and disseminates Informational bulletins and memorandums
  • Maintains department files, records and rosters
  • Prepares and archives closed files for retention and files required yearly reports
  • Performs related work as required


  1. Have successfully graduated from a standard high school or possess a G.E.D. certificate from a recognized issuing agency.
  2. Must have one (1) to three (3) years performing paid work experience performing general office or clerical work.


Essential Employees may be required to work during a declared emergency. The employee's Department Head will determine who will be required to work.

The position is generally sedentary. Employees sit most of the time, but may walk or stand for brief periods of time.

Depending on the number of applicants and the quality of their education and experience, the examination may consist of one or more of the following tests: Evaluation of Training and Experience, Oral Interview, Written Examination, or other assessment method. Applicants must attain a minimum score of 70 in each part of the examination in order to qualify. All successful applicants will be required to pass a medical examination, including drug screening, prior to appointment.

An eligible veteran who enters an open-competitive examination shall receive preference points added to the total passing score earned in the examination as provided for in the Florida Statutes. To obtain veteran's preference, candidates MUST submit a copy of separation papers and the City of Fort Lauderdale's veteran's preference claim form (J204).
