NATURE OF WORK:
Performs duties in specialized areas such as Property and Evidence. Primary duties include, but are not limited to, the preservation, processing/disposal, documenting of physical evidence; and clerical/paraprofessional work. The Property and Evidence unit receives evidence, which includes, but are not limited to, narcotics, firearms, currency, and bio-hazard material (human tissues or fluids having potential biological or chemical contamination). Receives and transports evidence from various police substations within the city of Orlando. Ensures all evidence is properly packaged, labeled, and placed in appropriate storage controls. Documents chain of custody, the condition of property, and all storage locations into a computer system. Prepares evidence for analysis by reviewing/amending/initiating required laboratory documentation forms and transports all evidence to and from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE). Exposed to chemicals, firearms, narcotics, bio-hazardous materials (such as air/blood borne pathogens, bodily excretions, contagious diseases such as HIV, and molds) while transporting evidence; removing evidence from storage closets/lockers; and warehouse environment.
Some tasks may require proficiency in typing, the application of specialized knowledge in interpretation of ordinances, rules, regulations, or procedures, and/or working independently on certain assignments. Work is performed according to established guidelines which apply to most usual work situations. Work is generally reviewed through random spot checks of evidence records or discussion of problems.
Examples of Duties
- Performs firearm background checks and works closely with the Police Legal Advisor to ensure the proper release of firearms.
- Maintains inventory of firearms, drugs, and general property.
- Testifies in court hearings about work performed.
- Remains available (rotation schedule) for call outs.
Minimum Requirements
High School Diploma or equivalent, plus four (4) years of clerical experience, preferably in law enforcement required; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Warehouse experience is preferred . Ability to operate personal computers using the Internet and various software programs including Microsoft Office. Must pass a police background investigation which includes a polygraph. A valid Florida Driver's License is required. Must type 25 WPM .
VALID DRIVER LICENSE FROM ANY STATE MUST BE PRESENTED AT TIME OF INTERVIEW. VALID FLORIDA DRIVER LICENSE MUST BE PRESENTED WITHIN 30 DAYS OF HIRE.
Typing Test Information:
- Tests are administered by invitation only.
- Only applicants meeting the minimum qualifications will be invited via email. Invitations will be sent to the email address listed on the application.
- Applicants will have (3) three days from the date of the invitation to complete the test. Tests may be completed virtually or onsite.
- Applicants are allowed one opportunity to pass the typing test within a posting period or any given 30 days. Scores are valid for one year.
