Description

Purpose of Classification The purpose of this classification is to supervises the daily operations of a summer day camp site, the monitoring of camp staff and volunteers, as well as any budgeted expenses for the summer day camp program. The Summer Day Camp Site Supervisor is responsible for overseeing parent attendance signatures, the daily attendance of scholarship participants, daily activities, field trips, weekly staff, and participant schedules, as well as conducting outside and inside facility and grounds inspections, organizing special camp events, and communicating with Recreation Staff daily.

Summer Camp Dates: Monday, June 5th, 2023 - Friday, July 28th, 2023
This position requires a New Hire Orientation on Monday, May 15th, 2023. Training dates will follow throughout the week. (Dates & Times are TBD)

Summer Camp Locations/Shifts:

Sims Center: 225 Northwest 12th Avenue, Boynton Beach, FL 33435
Camp hours - Monday - Friday - 7:30 AM - 5:30 PM
Shift times: 7:30 AM - 4:30 PM / 8:30 AM - 5:30 PM

Hester Center: 1901 North Seacrest Blvd., Boynton Beach, FL 33435
Camp hours - Monday - Friday - 7:30 AM - 5:30 PM
Shift times: 7:30 AM - 4:30 PM / 8:30 AM - 5:30 PM

***Summer Day Camp Counselors work 40 hours per week***
Essential Functions Organizes, plans, coordinates, monitors, implements, and supervises summer camp activities for youth and teens.

Supervises and coordinates the work of the Summer Day Camp staff assigned to the Camp Site under the direction of the Recreation Staff.

Communicates with Food Program staff about food deliveries, field trips, and feeding schedules for camp and outside patrons.

Evaluates staff to determine workplace effectiveness.

Coordinates weekly duties with program volunteers.

Maintains inventory, and purchases supplies & equipment needed for camp participants and counselors.

Coordinates and distributes staff and parent summer camp manuals.

Communicates with bus drivers regarding daily field trip schedules.

Assist with the development of camp policies and procedures.

Maintains communication with parents regarding disciplinary actions, schedules, daily attendance, etc.

Communicates maintenance needs to Recreation staff.

Compiles and maintains various camp reports.

Ensures staff abides to the guidelines of the Recreation & Parks Department, DCF, Law Enforcement, Risk Management etc.

Schedules weekly meeting with camp staff to discuss issues and outcomes.

Monitors the behavior of camp participants and staff to ensure a safe and productive environment.

Reacts quickly, calmly, and appropriately to emergency situations.

Answers and makes phone calls to appropriate staff, departments, vendors etc.

Ensures a clean and safe play environment.

Oversees the changes to daily activities and staff schedules.

Attends trainings when necessary for job enhancement and knowledge.

Completes pre and post bus inspections.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or valid equivalent; and
  • Two (2) seasons of previous experience working with children in a summer, day camp, or child care setting; and
  • Must possess valid CPR/First Aid Certification prior to date of hire and must maintain the certification thereafter.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum qualifications for education and experience must be met before consideration of the following preferred qualifications:

  • Two (2) years of experience in Recreation or related field.
  • Must possess (or obtain within fourteen days) a valid Florida Driver's License.

Knowledge of the limited abilities of youth as it relates to their ability to participate in recreational activities.
Knowledge of environmental factors that could have a negative affect on campers, such as bad weather, water hazards, poison ivy and wild animals.
Ability to plan and coordinate weekly schedule of activities for youth.
Ability to interpret and appropriately apply health and safety regulations to those youth participating in the day camp.
Ability to observe each camper daily and check for cuts, bruises, skin rashes, or other indications of illness or injury.
Ability to help the campers with daily self-maintenance tasks.
Ability to serve as a positive role model for campers, including attitude, punctuality, treating others with respect, sportsmanship, etc.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with camp participants, parents of campers, other camp employees and volunteers.
Ability to offer guidance in-group and camp-wide activities.
Ability to work as part of a team to ensure that all camper's needs are met in a fair and appropriate way.
Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, and initiate necessary action.
Ability to remain calm and act resourcefully in an emergency and in stressful situations.
Ability to recognize and respond to opportunities for group problem solving.
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Ability to keep camp supplies and equipment in good shape.
Ability to work with a variety of age and skill levels.
Ability to ensure proper supervision is maintained at all times.
