Description
This is a service maintenance position in the installation and maintenance of traffic and street signs and the application of pavement markers. This position reports to assigned supervisor. Works a forty (40) hour week. May require overtime.
Examples of Duties
- Assists with the fabrication, assembly, installation, maintenance and repairs of traffic and street signs.
- Assists with painting pavement markings with striping machine, brush, spray gun and other equipment as necessary.
- Operates a motor vehicle to and from work sites and picks up supplies and equipment.
- Prepares and maintains records on completed tasks.
- Provides information, answers questions, and obtains clarification on issues related to traffic and street signs and pavement markings.
- Uses shovels, posthole diggers, hand tools, air compressors and jackhammers.
- Performs manual labor such as digging holes and lifting, loading and unloading materials and equipment.
- Assists in traffic signal maintenance with supervision/training.
- Attends and completes periodic technical training related to highway signage, maintenance and installation duties.
- Completes all written documentation related to the job function.

Typical Qualifications
Education and Experience
- High school graduate or equivalency diploma, unless exempt as provided for in the Local 630 Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Licenses, Certifications or Registrations
- Possession of a valid State Drivers License.
- Must obtain and maintain a FDOT Intermediate Maintenance of Traffic (IMOT) Certification within six (6) months of hire.
Supplemental Information
- Knowledge of guidelines, work instructions, routines and procedures used in the installation, maintenance and repair of traffic and street signs and the application of pavement markings.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
- Knowledge of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for streets and highways published by the Federal Highway Administration.
- Ability to communicate with courtesy, tact and effectiveness when dealing with County employees, supervisors, vendor and manufacturing representatives, personnel from other government agencies and members of the public.
- Ability to perform math computations.
- Ability to prepare and maintain records.
- Ability to read maps.
- Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to perform manual labor such as lifting, loading, unloading and transporting materials.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
- Skilled in erecting signs and mixing small batches of concrete.
Essential Physical Skills
- Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.
- Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
- Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
- Reaching: Extending hand (s) and arm (s) in any direction.
- Standing: On ladders, on steps or on the ground for sustained periods of time.
- Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, at times for long distances.
- Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position. Lifting up to 100 lbs.
- Grasping: Picking, pinching, and manipulating small objects in confirmed spaces.
- Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
Work Environment
- Work is performed in an indoors and outdoors field environment with exposure to heat, dust, odors and fumes, cold and wet adverse climatic conditions.
